What is hepatitis D?

  • Hepatitis D is infection of the liver caused by Hepatitis D virus.
  • It can only infect people who are already infected with hepatitis B.
  • Vaccination against Hepatitis B can prevent Hepatitis D from occuring.

How is hepatitis D spread?

Hepatitis D spread through direct contact with blood or body fluids of an infected person. It can be transmitted through:

  • body fluids
  • blood
  • birth (from mother to her newborn)

What are the symptoms of Hepatitis D?

  • Jaundice (yellow color in the skin or the eyes)
  • Joint Pain
  • Abdominal Pain
  • Vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Dark urine
  • Fatigue

Who is at risk for hepatitis D?

You are at an increased risk of getting hepatitis D if you:

  • have hepatitis B
  • are a man who has sex with other men
  • often receive blood transfusions
  • use injectable or intravenous (IV) drugs

How is Hepatitis D treated?

There are no known treatments for acute or chronic hepatitis D.
