What is hepatitis D?
- Hepatitis D is infection of the liver caused by Hepatitis D virus.
- It can only infect people who are already infected with hepatitis B.
- Vaccination against Hepatitis B can prevent Hepatitis D from occuring.
How is hepatitis D spread?
Hepatitis D spread through direct contact with blood or body fluids of an infected person. It can be transmitted through:
- body fluids
- blood
- birth (from mother to her newborn)
What are the symptoms of Hepatitis D?
- Jaundice (yellow color in the skin or the eyes)
- Joint Pain
- Abdominal Pain
- Vomiting
- Loss of appetite
- Dark urine
- Fatigue
Who is at risk for hepatitis D?
You are at an increased risk of getting hepatitis D if you:
- have hepatitis B
- are a man who has sex with other men
- often receive blood transfusions
- use injectable or intravenous (IV) drugs
How is Hepatitis D treated?
There are no known treatments for acute or chronic hepatitis D.
